From the forest to the mill
Korsnäs’ two production plants in Gävle and Frövi are strategically
situated relative to the raw materials. Our prime intake area for pulpwood is within a 150 km radius of the two mills. The exception is hardwood, some of which is delivered from the Baltic States. A summary of the distribution of transports follows.
From the mill to the customer
Until 2007, Korsnäs’ logistical system looked like the map at top right. Most transports went by ship. Starting in 2008, Korsnäs’ logistical system is radically different, as shown on the lower map. Rail transports have replaced a large majority of sea transports.
The effects of the change are impossible to miss. Rail transports are up 60%, while sea and land transports are down by the equivalent amount. Almost 80% of transports from Korsnäs production facilities to the customer now travel by train.
Significant environmental advantages
Thanks to the new logistical concept, Korsnäs’ fossil carbon dioxide emissions from outbound transports are down 20–30%. Fossil energy consumption has been reduced by a corresponding amount.
By reducing its percentage of sea transports, Korsnäs has reduced its impact on the Baltic Sea. We have reduced the number of truck trips through Gävle by 9,000 per year, which city residents no doubt appreciate. Traffic is down in the community of Frövi, too, thanks
to our investment in a new road connection to the mill there.
Besides all of these environmental advantages, Korsnäs’ customers have gained significant value-added; deliveries are more precise, departures are more frequent, lead times have been shortened by up to 30% and transport damage is down. This is an excellent example of how an environmentally sound approach doesn’t have to stand
in the way of other interests.
