A JOB THAT NEVER ENDS

For us at Korsnäs, environmental efforts have become a natural part of our daily life. It’s about never stopping. We must be better than we were last year. And next year, we’ll set the bar even higher. Of course, we can be proud when we look back at what we’ve done so far. But that’s history now. It’s about being modest and constantly telling ourselves that we can become even better in how we treat nature. That is our driving force.

EU sets clear goals
In a March 2007 decision, the EU established targets for improving energy efficiency and increasing the percentage of renewable fuels used. Starting in 2020, the EU member states’ collective emissions of greenhouse gases must be reduced 20% compared to 1990 levels. In Sweden, a national goal of reducing emissions by 40% is being discussed.

We’re a step ahead
Korsnäs has always striven to minimise energy use in its production. Only 4% of Korsnäs’ carbon dioxide emissions from the production process of pulp, paper and board result from the use of fossil fuels.

As a result of the efforts we made between 1990 and 2007, Korsnäs has significantly reduced the fossil carbon footprint of its paper and board production. Through more efficient energy use and a transition to biofuels, our total emissions of fossil carbon dioxide in 2007 are 57% lower than our 1990 emissions – even though our production volume has grown over 30% in the same period.

In addition, at the start of 2008 we made a transition to a new, railway-based logistical system that has reduced emissions of fossil carbon dioxide from outbound transports by 20–30% compared
with previous years.

A clear vision
Our ambition? To become even better, of course! We are continuing our efforts to find new ways of reducing emissions of greenhouse gases in every area under our control, from forestry to production to customer deliveries. It’s a matter of identifying additional opportunities to increase energy efficiency, improving resource use and replacing oil and gas with more environmentally-friendly alternatives.

Our long-term goal is to reduce our carbon footprint by another 25% per unit produced between 2007 and 2020.

Our vision for the future is to stop using fossil fuels altogether in our
production process.
